New Zealand has proven itself highly attractive for international productions of feature films, television programmes and commercials. Emperor, Avatar, Bridge to Terabitha, 10,000BC, X Men Origins: Wolverine and Sir Peter Jackson’s Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit Trilogies are just some of the many major feature films made here. Auckland Film Studios is proud to have hosted some of these great productions and more.

New Zealand has vastly experienced crews, superb creative talent, diverse accessible locations, and world class post production and digital and visual effects facilities. Productions that have benefitted from this wealth of capability include Night at the Museum, District 9, Red Cliff, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Productions choosing New Zealand enjoy a secure environment that offers an internationally renowned quality of life.

New Zealand welcomes co-productions and has Co-production Treaties with a number of countries.

It is easy to get to New Zealand and, once here, you will benefit from the favourable time differences. Communications to home and around the world are easy and efficient with the latest in communications technology available.

And New Zealand’s business environment is highly conducive to international productions and budgets. Advantages include:

  • A simple, low-cost tax system
  • No sales, regional or state taxes
  • No compulsory employment tax or fringe-benefit tax obligations on self-employed workers, who make up most New Zealand crew members
  • A Government administered accident compensation insurance (ACC) for All New Zealanders, covering accidental death and injury.

For more detail please review the Film New Zealand Production Guide and Fact Sheets available here.

New Zealand is very production friendly. Film Auckland, Film New Zealand, The New Zealand Film Commission and a range of other national and local government agencies are attuned to the needs of film and television production and willing to assist. For a full list, see here.
